It describes how education has played a central role in American political development and offers an overview of HBCUs-the distinctive educational institutions whose work has driven key changes in the American democratic landscape. The chapter highlights the contributions that HBCUs have made to the educational and political landscapes in the United States, paying particular attention to the disproportionate representation of HBCU alumni among Black elected officials. I also discuss the role HBCUs have played in shaping the political landscape and, more broadly, the development of the American state. Finally, I outline the role that government has played in HBCU development and explain how government programs that have contributed to the growth of HBCUs have left a powerful mark on the political landscape, promoting the development of Black citizens through the transmission of politically relevant knowledge, helping to build politically relevant skills, promoting political efficacy, and fostering a commitment to service"--
