The chapter highlights the contributions that HBCUs have made to the educational and political landscapes in the United States, paying particular attention to the disproportionate representation of HBCU alumni among Black elected officials. I also discuss the role HBCUs have played in shaping the political landscape and, more broadly, the development of the American state.
