Description
Summary:Based on evidence from more than 200 languages, the book has the goal of bringing direction to the analysis of multiple exponence (ME) and of providing data to support this. The book explores all aspects of ME (also known as extended exponence), including definition and characterization of ME, treatment of ME in linguistic theories, types of ME, processing and acquisition of ME, and diachronic origins of ME. In addition, the author seeks answers to bigger questions, such as why ME is relatively rare, and why it exists at all. The book shows that ME can be systematic (not always lexically governed) and that it poses significant problems for linguistic theory. Many examples from a wide variety of languages are included throughout.
