| Summary: | This text focuses on the ethical and policy issues raised by childhood obesity. The authors, whose backgrounds are in philosophy, epidemiology, and community medicine, address topics including: parental responsibility; equity, stigma and discrimination; proposals to tax foods and drinks; and marketing to children. "Childhood obesity has become a major concern in many countries. This book is the first to focus specifically on the ethical and policy questions raised by childhood obesity and its prevention. The first part of this book reviews some of the uncertainties in the data about childhood obesity, before considering the ethical issues that it poses. These include questions about the priority that should be given to preventing obesity, parental responsibility, equity, and the stigma experienced by obese children. The second part of the book considers key policy debates and responses. It reviews the concept of the "obesogenic environment," then tackles debates about taxation and marketing, and finally examines the role that schools can play in obesity prevention. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on exploring the issues rather than advocating particular solutions and the close relation between the ethical and political dimensions of childhood obesity prevention. The book argues that political debate is needed to decide the priority given to childhood obesity and how to divide responsibilities for action. But it also suggests that there are a wide range of opportunities for action, and many of these are morally and politically attractive because they promise wider social benefits, beyond obesity prevention itself."--Provided by publisher |
