Description
Summary:This seminar examines Miss Representation, a documentary focusing on the portrayal of women and girls in the media and its effects on social development and change. Pat Mitchell, president and CEO of The Paley Center for Media, moderates the following panelists: Jennifer Siebel Newsom, filmmaker; Christiane Amanpour, host of This Week with Christiane Amanpour; Nancy Hult Ganis, executive producer of Pan Am; and Terrie Williams, founder of the Terrie Williams Agency. The panelists touch on such topics as: Amanpour's "enraged" reaction to points made in the documentary; whether consumerism and advertising are the best methods of affecting change; the need to educate young people to become media literate; why Ganis decided to make Pan Am; and the demeaning of women in American culture, despite being the majority. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: whether the documentary and its ideas blame the victims; Newsom's creation of the film while raising two children; and the need to avoid "male-bashing" in the search for universal respect.
