|a "Episcopalianism in Nineteenth-Century Scotland concentrates on the religious responses of various groups and cultures within Scottish Episcopalianism to the rise of an industrial society in nineteenth-century Scotland. After England, Scotland was quick to feel the impact of the industrial revolution of the late-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which transformed Scotland into a rapidly industrializing and urbanizing society. This new society also affected the Christian churches and religious believers. How it did so is examined in this book in the context of Scottish Episcopalianism. Among the Episcopalian sub-cultures examined are Episcopalian Gaels in the Highlands; the North-East crofters, farmers and fisherfolk; urban Episcopalians; Episcopalian aristocrats; and the effects in Scotland of Evangelicalism and Anglo-Catholicism within Episcopalianism. In addition to providing an outline of the history of Episcopalianism in Scotland from the sixteenth century to 1900, Rowan Strong argues for the importance of Episcopalianism and addresses the issue of Episcopalianism and Scottish identity. This is the first social history of Scottish Episcopalianism and its findings have relevance for research into the effects of modern society on religious belief."--Jacket
