Even before Covid-19, people understood that what is best for the individual may not be feasible for the group, and vice versa. Medical care and public health represent distinct dispositions and attitudes, competing views of health. The author, a primary care doctor trained that the individual patient matters most, fears this attitude has become so dominant in the way people think about health that it endangers the health of all. In this deeply personal narrative, it is argued that the public health perspective—the disorienting idea that people are all connected and therefore dependent on broad social policies—holds the solutions to today's most concerning health crises, from Covid-19 to obesity and climate change. The book offers eight explanations for why public health has continually “lost” in the conflict with medical care—from a loss in funding and resource allocation to how people view their personal priorities.
