| Summary: | The third volume of Soviet animated gems from the vaults of Soyuzmultfilm studios is focusted on the short films of legendary animator Yuri Norstein. The 25th, the first day (1968): Norstein's first film is a stirring tribute to the Bolshevik Revolution on October 25th. Seasons (1969): A man and a woman ride through the forest while the seasons change around them. Children and matches (1969): Norstein's rarely-seen educational short about the dangers of matches. The battle of Kerzhenets (1971): Auguably Norestein's first great animated film, inspired by the legend of the City of Kitezh which disappeared into a lake. The fox and the hare (1973): Norstein's utterly charming short about a tempramental "house-filching fox" who boot a poor rabbit out of its home. The heron and the crane (1974): An awkward crane and a high-spirited heron go back and forth on marrying each other, in this heartbreaking short. Hedgehog in the fog (1975): The deceptively epic journey of the tiny hedghog, filled with impossible marvels and dangers. Widely considered one of the greatest animated films ever made. A day before our era (1977): This experimental short on the French Revolution was apparantly abandoned before it was finished, and remains one of Norstein's rarest films. The tale of tales (1979): A story about stories, a dream of many dreams. A giant bull and a little girl skip rpoe. Couples dance under a streetlight until the male partners head off to war. And through it, the Little Grey Wolf watches silently. |
