Description
Summary:By the end of the 17th century, French silk production, centered in Lyon, rivaled the mills in Italy. Part of the reason for this acceleration was the establishment of strict quality controls for silk production through ordinances enacted in 166, as well as a steady increase in technical innovation. This book is a comprehensive survey of these ordinances, along with later judgments and royal letters patent. the "draps d'or, d'argent et soye (or soie)"--the first silk guild--was established in Lyon in the 1530s, and King Francis I granted the first privileges to silk producers there in 1536. This edition lists 67 regulations for producers and weavers, beginning with worker protections and rules; the later regulations cover in minute detail the composition, stitching, and colors of different silk textiles. A great many words used only in the French silk trade of the late 17th century appear in these regulations. The book was very likely issued in parts, and seem to differ in small ways from copy to copy. (Adapted from vendor's description.)
