Description
Summary:This case study introduces cooperative inquiry and explains its usefulness. We used cooperative inquiry to help answer the question, "What strategies for promoting recruitment, retention, and well-being have frontline mental health staff in nongovernmental organizations in rural and regional New South Wales experienced as being successful?" Cooperative inquiry is a participatory research methodology that focuses on collaboratively writing with people. Cooperative inquiry is also a reflective research method known for its inclusivity, utility, and flexibility. A cooperative inquiry can be used widely, such as in codesigned projects within community, education, health, and human services. Cooperative inquiry involves cycling through four phases: (a) establishing the focus area; (b) discussing, reflecting on, and collecting resources; (c) becoming immersed in the field; and (d) reflecting on and presenting knowledge. For our project exploring the recruitment, retention, and well-being of staff, we applied cooperative inquiry as a methodology and a method. The findings from our inquiry led us to recommend advocacy for policy changes and mechanisms to support staff development. We called for government and nongovernment grant and funding templates to include a line item for funding staff well-being. Our inquiry also led to the production of a series of fact sheets and an industry report containing identified effective strategies and resources for enhancing staff recruitment, retention, and well-being. We have found cooperative inquiry to be an effective method for generating original knowledge with real-world applications and for inclusion in research grant applications.
