Description
Summary:Qualitative research on subcultures and sport often include a participatory element. In this case study I discuss my research on skateboarding which is informed by what skate scholars have come to refer to as 'rolling ethnography.' This approach is used to gain a rich understanding of the role of sound in skateboarding culture. Part of this method is participating in skateboarding as an activity and culture, sensing the world through the board, seeing with a 'skater's eye,' and listening with a skater's ear. You will learn these terms and be given examples of how they can be relevant in other research and analysis. Rolling ethnography is also a way to address the unpredictability of social research, things change, and you adapt. Just as skateboarders constantly fall, or get kicked out from the places they wish to skate, rolling ethnography involves a resilient approach to research. Just like other bespoke methods, reflecting on rolling ethnography can help researchers consider tailor-made and embodied approaches to their own research. You will learn to consider ways in which your own research can be 'rolling' and crafted to the experiences and tools most appropriate to your topic. The case study will be of immediate relevance to anyone studying skateboarding subculture but is broadly important to the iterative and adaptive process of qualitative social enquiry.
