Description
Summary:This case study explores my PhD research on Nigerian newspaper coverage of maternal and child health (MCH) issues, conducted using a mixed-methods approach. The study comprised two distinct components: a quantitative content analysis of newspaper articles to identify patterns and trends in MCH coverage, and qualitative in-depth interviews with health editors of leading Nigerian newspapers to explore their perspectives on coverage priorities, challenges, and decision-making processes. The study was motivated by a previous study in which I discovered that MCH issues were among the least reported topics under the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals. This finding was particularly disheartening given Nigeria's significant challenges with MCH indices. This case study details the methodological processes and challenges encountered, including selecting a representative sample of newspapers, overcoming access barriers to the sampled newspapers, and securing participation from reluctant interviewees. It highlights the benefits of using a mixed-methods approach to gain a comprehensive understanding of the complexities in MCH coverage in the media. Despite the rigorous and time-consuming nature of the research, it produced a wealth of data that led to six academic publications on various aspects of MCH coverage. This case study aims to provide practical insights for researchers seeking to conduct content analysis studies in environments with poor archiving practices and low disposition to participation in research studies.
