| Summary: | In this case study, I explore a design-based research (DBR) project conducted with a class of 28 Grade 8 students who codesigned immersive learning experiences focused on the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life on Land. Participating as coresearchers, the students used accessible virtual reality (VR) authoring tools (e.g., MultibrushVR and FrameVR) and digital storytelling techniques to visualize complex environmental issues and foster empathy for conservation efforts. While prior research highlights VR's affordances for supporting learning transfer, retention, motivation, and emotional engagement, existing studies rarely incorporate the voices of children and youth in ways that are methodologically rigorous and trustworthy.Grounded in participatory DBR principles, this project demonstrates how students can engage with immersive technologies in deep and meaningful ways to express their ideas, concerns, and visions for a sustainable future. A key objective of this work is to build capacity within the educational research ecosystem to amplify youth voices on global issues that affect their lives and learning environments. Methodological considerations include facilitating authentic participation, managing logistical and technical constraints, and addressing ethical responsibilities in working with youth as coresearchers. Readers will gain practical insights into how students learn by codesigning with VR authoring tools to address real-world challenges and how DBR can be applied to support student-led inquiry and innovation. |
