Description
Summary:The typical research design tests how one variable (the independent variable) influences another (the dependent variable). However, the real-life situation is often more complicated. A third variable may influence the size or direction of a relationship between two variables. In such a situation, a moderation analysis can be used to examine how a third variable influences the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable. In this Case Study, we illustrate the principles of a moderation analysis using a study that examined whether educational attainment (the moderator) influences the expected effect of brain hippocampal volume (the independent variable) on memory decline (the dependent variable) in an existing dataset. The researchers' experiences in this Case Study are used to provide applicable lessons to prepare readers for moderation analyses in their own work and research. We outline practical lessons such as how to select a moderator, conduct a moderation, interpret a significant moderation effect, and conduct follow-up analyses using conditional effects/simple slopes and Johnson-Neyman techniques.
