| Summary: | This case study outlines a multimethod qualitative approach to investigating how collective memory operates as a form of symbolic and affective currency in contemporary cultural life. Drawing on four distinct empirical case studies--from institutional memory initiatives to political protests--this research demonstrates how memory is constructed, circulated, and contested across archival, digital, and public spheres. The cases include: (1) Picturing Lockdown, a COVID-19 photography archive and Instagram campaign and Color Our Collections, a library-led participatory memory initiative; (2) comparative protest de-commemoration in Israel and Spain; (3) the use of analogical memory in political discourse; and (4) the rhetorical and symbolic circulation of Holocaust memory across contemporary crises. Across these sites, I employed visual semiotic analysis, discourse analysis, and spatial reading techniques to examine how memory agents--from institutions to individuals--shape what is remembered, forgotten, or contested. Emphasizing methodological reflexivity, this case illustrates how research designs must adapt to complex terrains of memory production, particularly when memory is actively negotiated in real-time or mobilized for political effect. By focusing on method-in-use across diverse contexts, this study provides a transferable framework for students and researchers studying memory, media, and symbolic power. |
