| Summary: | This Case Study demonstrates how researchers can design and implement a mixed-methods study about how organizations use digital tools. This Case Study discusses a research project that examined how an umbrella organization of artistic nonprofit organizations (e.g., street orchestras, art galleries, and urban ecology centers) engaged with a crowdsourcing application. Online crowdsourcing is a powerful tool for organizations to increase and optimize their resources. The focus of this Case Study is the methodologic process of researching digital interventions. We combined empirical quantitative measures (i.e., use of the app, funding collected, number of personnel employed, ticket sales for events, and other financial measures) with participants' subjective opinions (i.e., interviews and questionnaires). The data were collected both online (i.e., digital communications, web scraping, and surveys) and on site (i.e., face-to-face interviews and event observations). We reflect on the methodologic strengths and limitations of applying the modified success case method to an online tool. The case highlights a growing trend where the phenomena studied and the data collection both take place online. |
