| Summary: | The focus of this exemplar is on how ethnomethodology can be used to analyse co-narrated atrocity stories. Here the atrocity stories are told in qualitative interviews, but such stories can also be found using ethnography (see, for example, Allen, 2001) or online. The extracts are taken from interview data provided by Dr Lisa Morriss from The University of Birmingham and are taken from her Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-funded doctoral research exploring the social work identity of social work Approved Mental Health Professionals. The dataset exemplar is targeted at those at a slightly advanced level. It will be particularly useful for ́€" but not limited to ́€" researchers who are interested in taking an ethnomethodological approach to analysis. It also discusses aspects of co-narration, familiarity and the telling of atrocity stories. Specifically, the focus is on explaining some of the core concepts in ethnomethodology and how ethnomethodology can be used to analyse co-narrated atrocity stories. Thus, the exemplar may also be useful for researchers interested in the telling of atrocity stories and in co-narration, even if not wishing to use an ethnomethodological approach. Included is one analysed extract taken from her paper "Nut clusters and crisp", as well as an unanalysed interview extract which can be used to answer the reflective questions. |
