| Summary: | This methodological example explores the nature of diary research in the social sciences. It draws on two diary extracts from social research in the early 2000s that examined how stroke survivors rebuilt their lives following their stroke. The data are provided by Professor Andy Alaszewski, an applied social scientist and Emeritus Professor at the University of Kent who from 2003 to 2006 led a multidisciplinary research team including Helen Alaszewski (qualitative researcher and nurse) and Jonathan Potter (medical consultant specialising in the care of stroke patients). The data are drawn from a research project that had three distinctive features: (i) it focused on younger stroke survivors (individuals of working age). This is unusual because most researchers tend to focus on older survivors since the incidence of stroke increases with age; (ii) it was longitudinal, with a first interview within three months of the stroke and three follow-up interviews over the following 18 months (they recruited 43 survivors and 33 completed all 4 interviews). Most social researchers just use one-off interviews; (iii) it included diaries (18 of the 43 survivors agreed to keep diaries and made them available to the research team). The logistic complexity and challenges of keeping a diary mean that the use of diaries in this type of research is rare. As well as the two diary entries, the exemplar includes four further extracts which you can use to practice on. The dataset will be of most use to researchers wishing to analyse documents of life such as diaries. |
