| Summary: | This case study is based on research using semistructured interviews to examine how disparate civil society groups with very different issue priorities were able to form a unified and cohesive advocacy coalition--the EU Food Policy Coalition--and develop a joint vision for a transformed food system. In this case study, I explain how we targeted a broad range of coalition participants and key stakeholders to participate in our semistructured interviews, and detail the process of organizing, preparing for, and conducting the interviews. Practical recommendations and considerations pertaining to constructing the interview protocol and carrying out the interviews virtually are also addressed. Finally, I recount key lessons that we learned from our experience conducting semistructured interviews to provide guidance to researchers who are interested in studying coalitions and social movements. Although there are certain challenges to be mindful of, semistructured interviews are an important research method for uncovering and documenting how large and diverse coalitions and the messages they produce for advocacy, public discourse, and policy debates remain coherent, unified, and cohesive. |
