| Summary: | The Velma Action to Reduce Cybercrime (Velma-ARC) is an initiative, the first of its kind in Nigeria, designed to identify, rehabilitate, and empower repentant cyber offenders, popularly known as "Yahoo boys" in Nigerian parlance. Velma-ARC provides social inclusion bootcamps to achieve its goals using mixed-method interventions in form of psychoeducational modules and information technology (IT) skills development, thereby empowering such offenders to make constructive contributions to society. Tenets of psychological models stemming from learning theories and behavior modification informed the rehabilitative dimension of the bootcamp. These models also supply rehabilitation psychologists with many potential intervention strategies, such as shaping, modeling, desensitization, chaining, extinction, and reinforcement, any of which can be adapted or modified to suit particular individuals, purposes, or problems. Within the rehabilitation settings of Velma-ARC, the goal was to apply these models in helping participants optimize therapy participation by increasing the frequency of therapeutically on-task behaviors while decreasing the frequency of therapy-competing behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of this case study is to showcase the Velma-ARC model as an effective mixed-methods intervention for rehabilitation programs that could serve as a valuable resource for learning and replication in related fields of psychometrics and intervention studies. |
