Description
Summary:In 2022, I conducted a pilot research project for my master's study, which explored the concept of compassion fatigue in adoptive parents and its impact on the psychosocial functioning of the adoptive family unit. The findings recommended that future research should employ a co-creation approach to better understand adoptive parent experiences. To ensure my doctoral research aligns with the current challenges and experiences of adoptive families, I decided to embed this recommended cocreation approach by including adoptive parents as coresearchers throughout my study. To facilitate stakeholder engagement, I established a strategic partnership for a codesign and knowledge-exchange workshop, along with ongoing advisory support. This collaborative approach aims to develop materials that empathize with and accurately represent the complexity of the lived experiences of adoptive parents, ensuring that the study is bespoke, and language- and context-sensitive. This case study will reflect on my experiences of engaging with stakeholders to conduct one aspect of my study, namely a scoping review of the literature that has explored empirical evidence supporting the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and systemic challenges facing adoptive parents who are raising children with trauma histories. The focus will be on navigating this process within the constraints and complexities of a PhD study.
