| Summary: | This case study is based on a local-level research project, the goal of which was to create a community-focused, interactive, and open-source data dashboard to help inform local planning, decision-making, and investment. We first made an outreach to the Robert Emmet Community Development Project (RECDP) in Dublin 8, seeking their collaboration in undertaking the project. Adopting an engaged research approach, we identified and accessed fourteen stakeholders with whom we held conversations, either in-person or online. The conversations centered on what kinds of information would be useful to collate and incorporate into the dashboard. With the same objective in mind, we organized a number of World Café events attended by approximately thirty local residents. Residents engaged in similar guided conversations and worked with large-scale physical maps to identify the distribution and use made of services in the neighborhood. Both sets of data were drawn upon to gauge the primary information needs of the community, and to begin building a customized data dashboard. The next stage was to source, collect, and combine data on key metrics in a number of thematic areas. Significant data deficits made this task particularly challenging. Finally, we tested the legibility of the dashboard by providing a demonstration to a group of residents for feedback. While our case study succeeded in implementing a community-focused methodology to produce a neighborhood level digital dashboard, we also noted the significant limitations imposed when potentially useful data is inaccessible, unavailable at local level, or simply not collected at all. |
