Description
Summary:This case study is based on a published research study that examined how academic entitlement can negatively impact the classroom environment. The particular research article involved in this case study was the second of a series of projects exploring how academic entitlement can hurt students, faculty, and the university at large. One hundred and ninety-seven students participated in this online study, which compared scores on academic entitlement with scales measuring engagement inside and outside the classroom, classroom behavior and civility scales, and students' thoughts on cheating. Using a linear regression analysis, the study found that academic entitlement resulted in lower engagement from students and more acceptance of incivility within the classroom, including greater tolerance of cheating behaviors. The major outcome suggested that academically entitled students are putting themselves at risk for lower academic performance while also making the classroom a more negative space for everyone else. Within this case study, we describe what academic entitlement is and how it has been found to negatively affect student performance. We further analyze the use of linear regression and the online survey format as part of the methodologic process. Finally, we discuss ways readers could consider their own education and how academic entitlement as well as engagement can impact their progress.
