| Summary: | Conducting cross-cultural research can be difficult when languages between cultures differ. In this case study, we present the challenges faced in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting qualitative data in Korean and English. The goal is to ensure rigor in data collection and to validate the equivalence of the meanings of responses obtained in different languages. We illustrate challenges and possible solutions with a cross-cultural mixed-method design in which we gathered data online from 264 adults from South Korea and the United States. Participants read two brief hypothetical stories intended to elicit attitudes about nonresidential divorced fathers' child support payments. Surveys were presented in participants' native language. The participants responded to closed- and open-ended questions about whether child support should be paid, how much should be paid, and whether child support payments should be altered due to changes in the family (e.g., remarriage, income alterations, family illness). Qualitative responses were collected in participants' native languages. We describe how data were coded using a "native language" approach by speakers of each language. We describe how we inductively identified codes and created codebooks in each language. We explain our methods and rationale when translating coded responses into English when comparing subsamples. Issues to consider are examined when conducting cross-cultural research in two languages. |
