| Summary: | "From the lands of the contemporary Commonwealth of Kentucky and across the waters of Weli Sipu in the cornfields and highways of Indiana, these poems follow the northward and westward migrations of people across these lands. Wander through the one-time Lenape territories of Opek Sipu and onto the paths our ancestors were forced to follow. Utilizing the rich tapestry of midwestern history and folk mythologies alongside the traditional knowledge of experiences of the region's Indigenous nations, Commonwealth unfolds as a lyric journey northward. Following rivers through hollers, rail lines, highways, and buffalo traces, these poems shadow the settlement and the movement patterns for the peoples of the region and embrace our rooted histories. This is a lyric voyage that focuses upon as well as calls into question the spatial and interpersonal histories of the land and waters of the region. From Abe Lincoln the Indian Killer to supernatural turtles to contours of water against shorelines this lyric voyage crafts questions about us all from our collective mythologies. From these questions arise a more honest vantage point of land ethics and the history of the lands we walk upon. And in it, we find commonality through movement and migration."-- |
