Description
Summary:As successive forms of power and knowledge have been brought to bear upon residents in and around Columbia, the working-class, immigrant, Black and brown residents of Manhattanville and Harlem have continually contested these tools and their policies, whether by refusing to answer the intrusive questions of the 1900 census, organizing against slum clearance in the 1960s or the protesting the taking of property by eminent domain in the 2000s. By examining the contested formation of the American Acropolis over the longue durée, this book highlights continuities and regularities in discourses and practices of development and conflict.
