| Summary: | "Performances of Spiral Time is an English translation of Leda Maria Martins' Performances do tempo espiralar, originally published in Portuguese in 2021. A contemporary theorist of Afro-Brazilian religious performance, Martins brings together a series of compositions on what she terms "spiral time"-a curvilinear temporality that simultaneously bends forward and backward, always in a process of both veiling and revealing, furling and unfurling of the temporal instances that constitute our modes of being. Drawing on conceptions of time that informed the cultures of Africans who were displaced by the diasporic Atlantic slave-trade and on ritual performance practices of Afro-descendants in the Americas, particularly in Brazil, Martins argues that "spiral time" finds its most powerful expression in the "language constituted by the body in performance," the body alive and in motion, which becomes "the site of what spirally still and already is, of what could and can come to be.""-- |
