Description
Summary:"This book has been assembled from excerpts of the letters of Flathead Reservation Indian Agent Peter Ronan written to the U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs about Ronan's dealings with Eneas Big Knife, the chief of the Flathead Reservation Kootenai Indians between 1865 and 1900. The letters--from Ronan's first appointment as agent in 1877 to his death in 1893-- have been preserved in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The correspondence describes Eneas' efforts to help his Kootenai Indian community adjust to the loss of the buffalo and other hunting resources in the late nineteenth century and to keep the peace with hostile white settlers in the Upper Flathead Valley."--back cover.
