| Item Description: | The Nonesuch Dickens, designed by Francis Meynell, is limited to 877 sets, in a version of Martin's type specially cut for the edition. Each set is accompanied by one of the original steel plates or woodblocks made for Chapman & Hall's original editions of Dickens. The text is taken chiefly from the "Charles Dickens" edition of Dicken's works published 1868-70, and the illustrations are printed from the original plates and blocks. Volumes bound in various colored cloth; leather labels on spines, stamped in gold; top edges gilt. The plate case includes a mounted copy of the printed plate, and a letter of authenticity, signed by Deputy Chairman on Chapman and Hall letterhead. The Cushing Library/Lit./Mitchell copy is [number] 743, steel plate is "The room with the portrait" by Phiz, from Little Dorrit [facing page 58]. |
