|a "Transatlantic Disbelonging theorizes the creative work of Nigerian diasporic women artists and performers. Bimbola Akinbola contends that this work unsettles received notions of home, respectability, and belonging, both in Nigeria and in diaspora. Akinbola terms the affective strategy evident in these womens' work "disbelonging." Through disbelonging Nigerian women artists craft subjectivities that evade conservative expectations about home and family life in favor of affective strategies that value alienation as fertile ground for creating queer lives. Akinbola's analysis reveals the degree to which Nigerian women's sense of belonging is always already hemmed in by patriarchal and colonial expectations, rendering the experience of "going against one's culture," central to self-determination and freedom. Through sharp readings of artists like Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, ruby amanze, Nnedi Okorafor, and Zina Saro-Wiwa, Bimbola Akinbola produces a highly original and sensitive portrait of contemporary Nigerian women's art"--
