| Summary: | "In her long and fruitful career - she became known in the early 1960s as a leading representative of Op-Art - Bridget Riley has developed her images through constellations of simple shapes: stripes, triangles, circles and ovals, diamonds and curves. She explores the rules of perception in colors and rhythms, inspired by theories and painting practices from Egypt to Post-Impressionism. Her art serves as a contemporary laboratory, rooted in formal experiments and precisely defined color tones. Since the late 1970s, she has sometimes moved beyond the window format of the canvas to create wall paintings that bring together the work, the viewer, and the space in direct dialogue. An exceptional exhibition at the Max Hetzler Gallery in Berlin brought together 13 of these wall paintings from 40 years: dot paintings, stripe paintings, and complex forms whose inner logic eludes a quick glance. The exhibition is documented through images of the works and installation views that make the polyrhythm visible on the walls. An essay by Éric de Chassey describes the central role of this medium in Riley's work, while texts by Richard Shiff and Robert Kudielka provide the aesthetic and biographical context." |
