Walker is an artist who has not been defined by nationality, having spent considerable periods teaching and painting in London, Leeds, New York, New Haven, Melbourne, Boston and China, and eventually settling in Maine where he has lived and worked for the last twenty years. His practice is inspired by a range of visual references--as he puts it, Goya is the main player in his life, and he is also drawn to the authenticity of non-Western cultures, particularly to Australian bark paintings and the art of Oceania. His work cannot readily be defined as abstract or figurative, and his guiding thought is to have a conversation with the art of the past to embrace feeling and touch, to be aware of the sound of the brush. Despite representing Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1972, winning the John Moores Painting Prize in 1976, and being nominated for the Turner Prize in 1985, as well as having had solo shows and works bought by major public galleries and museums around the world, Walker has exercised a resistance to reputation building, and visualizes his studio practices as a slow, evolving process. Including a long narrative by curator and art historian Catherine Lampert, and an essay by art historian Alex Bacon, this immersive new monograph is a long overdue evaluation of Walker's work from the past half century, connecting key works with new perspectives and historical influences, and examining the role of form, color and presence in his masterly paintings." -- |
