| Item Description: | Originally published as a weekly by John Wilkes to counter Tobias Smollett's "The Briton," a weekly sponsored by Lord Bute. Wilkes and others were the contributors. For reprinting no. 45 as part of the first collected edition, Wilkes and publisher J. Williams were fined and imprisoned. Only a few copies of suppressed v. 3 survive. "Errata" at end of volume 3. John Wilke's copy, with his signature on title page, v.1, and his annotations throughout. An advertisement for this set, with Wilke's annotation "From the Monthly Review, for August, 1763" is pasted in on rear fly leaf of v.1. The Cushing Library/Rare Books Collection copy was acquired as part of the Lois Goddard Morrison Collection of Eighteenth Century Literature. |
