Description
Summary:"Sins of Excess contributes to modern-day historical debates that attempt to reassess the impact of the Spanish invasion of the Americas. This book takes a holistic approach and examines pejorative categories like idolatry, magic, and sodomy to highlight the varied definitions and applications of the term "excess." By doing so, Sins of Excess shows how non-orthodox ritual devotions and non-reproductive sex acts generated conflict in the colonial era. This monograph highlights the role played by powerful Indigenous ritual specialists which placed them in direct competition with colonial clergy. Moreover, this manuscript maintains that colonial officials' preoccupation with excess stretched beyond the location of the act, often in rural villages, and into the minds and manors of elites in colonial Mexican society. In addition to the examination of royal decrees and ecclesiastical missives, commoner testimony from criminal cases and Mexican Inquisition cases offers a unique perspective of how asymmetries of power shaped the livelihoods of New Spain's most vulnerable subjects"-- Provided by publisher
