| Item Description: | Title enclosed in decorative border. 284 hymn tunes inclose score, fuguing tunes and sacred choruses in full score, arranged for mixed voices; melodies of the hymn tunes in top voice. The hymn tunes include metrical indications and sometimes names of composers or compilers (Walker, Moreton, Travers, and others). A few have English words, but most are textless. It is not clear who "Walker" was, for most of the tunes (or at least their names) do not appear in either Southern Harmony (1835) or Christian Harmony (1866) compiled by William Walker. Some of the tunes appeared in "New selection of sacred music : consisting of about two hundred and sixty approved Psalm and hymn tunes ..." compiled by Samuel Dyer. 3rd edition (Baltimore : Printed for the Author and sold by Joseph Robinson, 1825), but others remain obscure. Includes index of tune names, page numbers, and references to pages in "Walker." |
