Description
Summary:"During the 1982-2016 years of the Colombian armed conflict, the Colombian government alternated its policies toward the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a left-wing guerilla movement. The government opted for negotiation policies when it was in a position of political weakness, and for military strategy when it favored insurgent defeat. Government administrations during this period applied these two different approaches in order to incentivize demobilization among FARC without conferring political legitimacy or large concessions to this insurgent group. These shifts in policy created a "moving target" pattern of dealing with FARC that based itself on the group's evolving nature, with government strategies changing whenever there was a significant surge or deflation in FARC's calculated strength. FARC, meanwhile, adopted its own form of "legitimation" by broadening its ideological basis, garnering mobilized popular support, and creating "social contracts" with various stakeholders in and around areas of FARC influence, allowing the group to consolidate its authority through a highly organized system of control. The Combination of All Forms of Struggle explores the three modes of "legitimation"-charismatic, teleological, and eudaemonic-at work between the Colombian government and FARC when discussing the group's legitimacy, objectives, and political survival. By providing this framework and vocabulary of "political legitimacy," Alexandra Rachel Phelan analyzes the consequences of insurgent authority and expands on existing COIN and negotiation literature"--
