Description
Summary:"The Texas General Land Office (GLO) is our oldest state agency, formed in 1836 "to determine who owned what and where." The authors have selected more than 100 maps, each of which is accompanied by a brief essay that situates the map within its larger historical and cartographic context and assesses its impacts, "with an eye to the relationship between cartography, sovereignty, and power." The book is divided into two parts. Part One has five chronological chapters, beginning with European depictions of the Americas in the 16th century and finishing with themed maps commissioned by the GLO in the 20th and 21st centuries The chapters follow a periodization familiar to students of Texas history: exploration and discovery, inter-imperial conflict and Spanish rule, the Mexican national period, the Republic of Texas, and modern statehood. Within each period are maps at various scales, from the hemispheric to the cadastral, intended to create a kaleidoscopic view of the state's changing borders and boundaries. Part Two consists of four chapters that explore the GLO's older thematic maps: military cartography, as well as railroad, county, and city maps. Each of the nine chapters includes a feature the authors call "Beyond the Neatline," an essay that goes "beyond the borders of single maps to synthesize cartographic trends, explore mapping techniques, and introduce contributors often obscured from view by conventional narratives of map history.""--
