Pierre Singaravélou tells the story of how the city developed into an international hub in East Asia, one that prevailed even after the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 destroyed entire neighborhoods and led to the death of many Chinese civilians. In fact, in the Rebellion's aftermath, with a declared desire to modernize Tianjin and its surrounding region, Britain, France, Germany, the United States, Russia, Japan, Italy and Austria-Hungary founded the first international government of the contemporary era.
