Summary:This text on instruments used in nuclear medicine can be used in courses in nuclear medicine physics, nuclear medicine equipment, gamma cameras, and radiology. The text assumes an understanding of radioactivity and interactions in matter; a brief overview of atomic structure and radiation interactions is provided in an appendix. Sections cover instrumentation, image characteristics, and quality control issues of small instruments (gas-filled detectors, scintillation detectors, and semiconductor detectors), the gamma camera, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and positron emission tomography (PET). The book also includes a chapter on computed tomography in nuclear medicine. Learning features include chapter outcomes and summaries, key terms, sample calculations, and chapter lists of sources for overall understanding. The text is illustrated with b&w images and photos of equipment, and contains about 40 pages of reference appendices on basic electronics and devices, film and film processing, computer fundamentals, and collimator mathematics.
