| Item Description: | Title from spine. Sixty-six letters of various lengths, written in ink on plain stationery (18-21 cm) interleaved in a 19th-century blank book. Most letters written on front and back. Two leaves of handwritten notes making reference to particular letters indicated by dates; placed in sleeve inside the book. The author, Louis Philémon Basset, was a naval officer, who had an interest in literature. Some letters were written from Avranches, where Basset settled; others were addressed from Normanville. The recipient was Comtesse (Countess) Olga de Lagrené, daughter of a French diplomat, who died 25 November 1897, aged 59. (From French Wikipedia, viewed online.) |
