Description
Summary:This book analyzes the impersonation of Maya supernatural beings through the hieroglyphic texts of the Classic period (250-900 A.D.). The ritual, which was recorded with the clause ˀub'aahil ˀaˀn, involved the incarnation of gods and the deification of rulers. The study focuses on the rites, ceremonies and characters that performed this ritual, its origins and establishment with the arrival of the Teotihuacans, the cities that performed it and its political and religious implications. The supernatural beings that were impersonated, deities and ancestors, some of them unknown in the general Maya religious pantheon, are also described. The phenomenon is analyzed comparatively with the Ixiptla of Central Mexico and with other parts of the world, deepening understanding of this under-studied yet widespread religious practice.
