| Summary: | The first part of this voyage was undertaken as a scientific expedition to measure the length of a degree of longitude near the Equator. La Condamine and his party arrived in Quito (present-day Ecuador) in June 1736. Due to delays, quarrels and other problems (including the murder of the ship's surgeon, Jean Seniergues, at a bullfight), the project was not completed until 1743. La Condamine then undertook a four-month journey by raft down the Amazon, making numerous scientific observations along the way. He studies of the rubber tree and of cinchona (quinine) were especially important. |
