| Summary: | How can we improve reflexivity in students' professional development? A group of three second-year medical students at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, Makayla Dearborn, Eleanor Fortner-Buczala and Krishani Patel, come together in this NVivo podcast to discuss their research on how using ePortfolios improves professional development for future doctors.Patel begins by defining a key term of their research, 'Professional Identity Formation (PIF)', as the 'professional development of a student over the years in their field', which includes the 'medical mission, a student's personality and professional [self] all coming into one, into that individual'. By writing ePortfolios, medical students can reflect on their experiences and their growth as medical professionals. The ePortfolios give students the opportunity and freedom to present themselves in a creative way that a traditional CV would not allow. This project gave the researchers the opportunity to aid in their own development as students, particularly during a stressful time as they prepared to apply for residency.Fortner-Buczala goes on to discuss their data-collection approach. They used a pre-existing a survey to allow for both qualitative and quantitative data to be collected from students and staff. They spoke to faculty members about their approaches to teaching PIF. To understand existing research on ePortfolio use and PIF, they also conducted a literature review, using Web of Science, to explore PIF across all disciplines, since professionalism exists outside the medical sphere. Finally, Dearborn reflects on the results of their research. They realized that both students and staff would benefit from a better understanding of what professional identity formation is and how this can be implemented in their learning and teaching. In addition, the researchers developed a better understanding of how ePortfolios can be improved, taking into consideration elements such as organization, ease of use and tracking professional growth. This podcast series is brought to you by a collaborative partnership between SAGE Publishing and QSR International: https://www.qsrinternational.com. |
