Description
Summary:Mürsiyeli İbrahim (or Ibrahim of Mursiye) was a Turkish-Islamic sailor and cartographer who lived in Tripoli in the 15th century. He drew a map of the Mediterranean in 1461, fifty-two years before the better-known cartographer Piri Reis. This Mediterranean map, drawn on gazelle skin, shows the entire Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Seas, as well as the coasts of Western Europe and the British Isles, designed to serve navigation purposes. This area lies between approximately 27 degrees - 54 degrees north latitude, 12 degrees west, 42 degrees east longitude circles. Cartographers who have examined the map state that the accuracy in this work is surprisingly close to today's maps. The precision in the East-West direction is especially remarkable.
