When the first edition of the book was published in 2006 the global equity markets had recovered much of their losses following the technology stock driven crash of 2000-2003 - a period during which the UK market fell by over 45%. By the time the second edition was published in 2009, investors had suffered the trauma of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). The UK and global markets fell by over 40% during the period November 2007 to February, and the economy was deeply in recession. Since the lows of 2009 - and via the third edition in 2013 - the markets have delivered very strong returns, even taking into account the pandemic period 2020-21, and the fall in global bond and equity markets in 2022.
