Description
Summary:Since publication of the first edition in 2005, Learning to Teach, Teaching to Learn has been a trusted resource for social work field education, the heart of social work education. Lauded as "a well-balanced and realistic discussion of all aspects of working with students" (Anne E. Fortune, University at Albany, State University of New York), the first edition set out in detail the tasks of field instruction -- developing assignments, teaching agency-based practice, and evaluating students' abilities to learn social work practice skills and achieve learning goals. With this second edition, the authors expand the reach of the book to highlight the skills field instructors need to convey the art and science of professional social work practice in the context of competency-based education. While retaining all the how-to aspects of the first edition, the authors also have incorporated a human rights framework and social justice perspective into their discussions. Frequent references to the CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards competencies (which are included in an appendix) help field instructors contextualize, individualize, and apply the competencies to their work with students.
