Henri Chatelain later obtained the copper plates and kept the geographic features and text but aded added a number of decorative features. The central cartouche depicts the Dutch Maiden, a horn of plenty, holding a staff while seated in the symbolic garden of Holland. Tracks of explorers are shown including "Route du tour du Monde d'Olivier de Nord", "Route de Jacques le Mairo", and "Route de Indes Orientales" which depicts an outdated sailing route across the Indian Ocean. The western section of Australia is depicted, illustrating Abel Tasman's discovery on his voyages in 1642-44, along with the assumed landmass, Terre Australe Incognue and the South Pole Cercle du Pole Antarctique. Vertical fold line at center. |
