| Summary: | This case study explores the methodological and ethical challenges of conducting research with historically stigmatized groups--specifically, LGBT individuals. Key issues include ensuring informed consent, maintaining confidentiality and creating "safe spaces," anticipating and preventing emotional distress when designing the study, and building trust with participants and their communities. In a study on how LGBT people obtain sexual health information, we endeavored to conduct this research in a way that was safe, respectful, and actively involved the input of participants. This involved collaborating with LGBT organizations and community leaders, increasing our own cultural competence in LGBT issues and "speech," and training research assistants in trauma-informed practices. By detailing the practical and ethical considerations faced and the strategies employed to overcome them, this case study provides valuable insights for researchers conducting studies with sensitive populations. Readers will learn how to engage with community partners, adapt research methods in response to participant feedback, and ensure that research benefits extend beyond academic contributions to positively impact marginalized communities. |
