Description
Summary:This guide will help readers reflect on theories about masculinities in relation to scholarship about men and discuss two qualitative methods for conducting research about gender. A primary goal of this guide is to review literature that seeks to integrate research on men and masculinities into broader discussions about gender and identity. Based on the literature discussed, the first half of the guide reviews grounded theory and ethnographic methods as a means to integrate empathetic practices into research about men and masculinities. Placing empathy at the center of research about men and masculinities offers opportunities to reflect on assumptions about men, evaluate critiques of masculinities, and engage in broader discussions about gender and identity. The first half of this guide examines theories and themes in social science research about men and masculinities, and the second part of this guide applies the themes and concepts from this review to a discussion of methods that social science researchers can use to study men and masculinities.
