Description
Summary:My experiences during this case study highlighted the importance and interdisciplinary value of comparative methodology when examining the past, evaluating the present, and predicting potential future variables of one specific case. The original research project from which this case study emerged explored the history of Russia which, with its Medieval roots, centuries of colonialism, the multigenerational experiment of the Soviet Union, and its return to global prominence during the tenure of Vladimir Putin, provided me with plenty of different options for my examination into the concept of deadly recruitment policies that sought to deploy men selected for use as expendable resources in times of conflict. In this case study, I emphasize the macrosocial research approach through three specific methodologies which are parallel demonstration of a social science theory, similar-systems case selection, and process-tracing. The practical challenges addressed in the case study include the consistent omission of data on the research subjects since such men and boys have received very little attention from scholars and institutions alike. Learning how and why it is useful to identify these "hidden" victims of Russian civil-military relations empowers students to apply similar comparative methodological approaches in their own analyses of contemporary macrosocial issues relevant in countries that share many of the same ambitions.
