Description
Summary:Between 2020 and 2024, I completed a PhD thesis exploring people's experiences of emerging multiplicity, the experience of having two or more selves that reside in a single body. Previous research focused solely on medicalized understandings and professional voices, thus limiting the ability of people who view their experiences positively and holistically to have their stories heard. As a result of the underexamined phenomenon, constructivist grounded theory was identified as an appropriate methodology to construct a novel theory into the experience of being multiple. This case study provides a detailed overview of constructivist grounded theory methodology, with particular attention being paid to the reasoning behind the choice, along with benefits and challenges to utilizing such methodology within the confines of a PhD thesis. Attention is also paid to the use of various technology as a means of data collection and analysis, and the ability to elucidate multiple perspectives within a grounded theory research project. The case study shares reflections of my journey conducting research within the boundaries of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in ultimately beneficial changes to the research design, which focused on online data collection methods.
